Henry G Peters
I might be one of the few remaining alumni of The Saint Mark School who
remembers Henry. Although not realizing at the time of my youth, both our families
answered the “Call to Serve.” The Peters’ and Ziemba’s participated in many ventures
mainly through our church and sports. Parish festivals at St Marks were huge that
required many in both our families to help. A fond memory is when Henry and I were
working the ring toss game where you tossed a round ring on top of a pop bottle to win
a prize.
Henry’s family were so involved with the West Glen Park Little League that played
games in fields located between the Calumet River and 35 th Avenue/IU Northwest,
Broadway and Harrison Streets. Although he disliked me calling him Hank, Hank and I
played on the same Little League teams in 1961 and 1962, pictures of which are
somewhere. We were altar servers together as well as classmates.
After graduation, we parted our ways, he to Andrean and I to Lew Wallace, he to
Purdue and I to The Indiana University! We renewed our friendship as brother Knights
of Columbus. It was when I was moving up in leadership roles in the Knights that the
significance of Henry’s computer expertise, especially with the Financial Secretaries
program, was realized.
When I was elected State Deputy of the Indiana Knights of Columbus in 2000, I
recognized that many Financial Secretaries did not have confidence in using
Supreme’s program to manage the local Council’s business. My theme that year was
“A Call to Serve.” I called upon Henry to help. He constructed an educational program
with slides and handouts to guide the FS”s towards understanding and working
through Supreme’s program. Henry, Past State Deputy Jeff Biel and I traveled
throughout Indiana at regional meetings where both Grand Knights and Financial
Secretaries were required to attend, adding significant proficiency in the administration
of their Councils.
Henry became known as the “Guru” with the Financial Secretaries computer program
and was the “go to” person for help that he gladly offered. Even Supreme relied upon
his knowledge by rewriting its program.
Henry was the epitome of what a Call to Serve is about. Examples are his service and
participation in our Church, the Knights of Columbus and to the community in blood
Donations are to be admired and a tier in life for all of us to try to achieve. I will miss our
chats at Knight’s affairs and State Conventions, remembering old times and discussing
ways to make our world better. Way to go Hank, you did it well.
